Urbanized Areas (50,000+ population)
Purpose/Eligible Recipients: Grants for public transportation in
urbanized areas. Funds are distributed by FTA using a formula based on
population and population density. In areas of over 200,000 population, grants
are awarded directly to the local recipient. Grants for urbanized areas with
populations under 200,000 may be made to the Governor or to local recipients
designated by the Governor. Currently, the cities make application directly to
FTA.
Funding Ratios: Capital/Planning: 80% federal maximum and 20%
state/local match on most projects. Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
(ADA) and Clean Air projects may receive up to 90 percent federal funding.
Administrative/Operating: 50% of the deficit maximum federal share and
50% state/local match.
Remarks: Section 5307 is the major federal funding source for
urbanized transit properties. Unobligated funds may be transferred to another
Section 5307 recipient or to the Section 5311 program.
