Order a Permit Now! The Texas Department of Transportation issues permits for the operation of
oversize or overweight vehicles for the movement of water well drilling
machinery and equipment that cannot be reasonably dismantled. A permit issued
under this section authorizes a permitted vehicle to operate only on the state
highway system.
The maximum dimensions may not exceed 16’ wide, 14’ 6" high, 110’ long, and
maximum weight may not exceed limits stated in Texas size and weight limits.
How Do I Apply? Customers may use
Online Permits (CPS) to apply for and receive a permit, or by submitting a completed
Form 302,
Application and Renewal for Time Permits [pdf, 2 pages, 27kb] by facsimile (512) 465-3585. You can
also apply by telephone (800) 299-1700 or by mail to the address on the
application.
Motor Carrier Registration Requirements Prior to obtaining an
oversize/overweight permit, an applicant permitted under the provisions of
Transportation Code, Chapter 623, Subchapter D, must be
registered as a
commercial
motor carrier or, if not required to obtain a motor carrier registration,
file a surety bond with the department.
A Commercial motor vehicle includes any motor vehicle or combination of
vehicles with a gross weight, registered weight, or gross weight rating in
excess of 26,000 pounds that is designed or used for the transportation of cargo
in furtherance of any commercial enterprise.
Vehicle Registration Requirements Proper vehicle registration must be obtained through TxDOT's Vehicle Titles and
Registration Division or your
county tax office. Vehicles must be registered in
accordance with
Transportation Code,
Chapter 502, for the maximum gross weight
applicable to the vehicle under
Transportation Code,
Section 621.101, or have
the distinguishing license plates as provided by
Transportation Code,
Section
504.504, if applicable to the vehicle.
Temporary registration cannot be used for this type of permit.
Fees
The fee for this permit is $270, plus the highway maintenance fee for an
overweight load. Highway maintenance fees are as follows:

For loads exceeding 200,000 pounds gross weight, total axle spacings must exceed
95’. A vehicle supervision fee will be charged in addition to the permit and
highway maintenance fees. An application for a permit requiring an engineering
analysis must be accompanied by the vehicle supervision fee and a copy of the
contract for transport.
Single trip permits are also available for the movement
of vehicles and loads which exceed 254,300 pounds (total gross weight), or
exceed the maximum permittable weight on any axle or axle group, or exceed
200,000 pounds with less than 95 feet of axle spacings. For additional

- personal check, business check, cashier's check, or money order, payable to the
Texas Department of Transportation (for mail applications only)
- cash (MUST be delivered to a cash office) or
- with funds deposited in a pre-established escrow account
Permit fees are non-refundable.
Other Information
- The permitted vehicle must not travel over a
load-restricted bridge or
load
zoned road with weights greater than the posted capacity.
- Permittee is responsible for routing and obtaining
current restrictions and
information concerning hazardous weather related
road conditions.
- Permittee must follow all curfews as listed on
Permit Movement Conditions and Curfews Form 001 [pdf, 1 page,
24kb], which must be attached to the permit at all times.
- The permitted vehicle must:
- have a front escort vehicle if the width exceeds 14’ but does not exceed 16’
when traveling on a two-lane highway;
- have a rear escort vehicle if the width exceeds 14’ but does not exceed 16’ when
traveling on a roadway of four or more lanes, unless an exception is granted by
the MCD based on a route and traffic study; and
- Daylight movement only. Loads not exceeding 10' wide or 100' long with legal
front and rear overhang may travel at night on the Interstate Highway System
only.
- Permit is non-transferable between permittees or vehicles.
