Order a Permit Now! The Texas Department of Transportation issues annual utility pole permits for
vehicles used exclusively for the transportation of poles required for the
maintenance of electric power transmission and distribution of lines. Maximum
vehicle dimensions may be up to 75’ long and must meet other
Texas legal size
and weight limits. How Do I Apply? Customers may use
Online Permits (CPS) to apply for and receive a permit, or by submitting a completed
Form

You may also apply by telephone (800) 299-1700, or by mail to the address on
the application.
Annual utility pole permits must be renewed each year prior to the "movement to
begin" date.
Motor Carrier Registration Requirements
Prior to obtaining an oversize/overweight permit, an applicant permitted
under the provisions of Transportation Code, Chapter 623, Subchapter D, must
be registered as a commercial motor carrier or, if not required to obtain a
motor carrier registration, file a surety bond with
the department.
A commercial motor vehicle includes any motor vehicle or combination of
vehicles with a gross weight, registered weight, or gross weight rating in
excess of 26,000 pounds that is designed or used for the transportation of cargo
in furtherance of any commercial enterprise.
Vehicle Registration Requirements Proper vehicle registration must be obtained through TxDOT's Vehicle Titles and
Registration Division or your
county tax office. Vehicles must be registered in
accordance with
Transportation Code,
Chapter 502, for the maximum weight as set
forth by
Transportation Code,
Chapter 621. Your trailer must be currently and
properly registered.
Vehicles with Temporary Registration are not eligible for this type of permit.
Fees The fee for an annual utility pole permit is $120.
Fees are payable by:
- MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express
($1 service charge)
- PAC-Permit Account Card
- personal check, business check, cashier's check, or money order, payable to the
Texas Department of Transportation (for mail applications only)
- cash (MUST be delivered to a cash office) or
- with funds deposited in a pre-established escrow account
Permit fees are non-refundable.
Other Information This permit allows for unlimited movement on state-maintained roads in the State
of Texas under the following conditions.
- Permittees are responsible for routing, abiding by and obtaining
current
restrictions, information concerning hazardous weather-related
road conditions.
- Permittees are responsible for following all permit conditions and curfews as
listed on the
Permit Movement Conditions and Curfews Form 001 [pdf, 1 page,
24kb], which must be attached to the permit at all times.
- Permitted vehicles may not not exceed the posted capacity of any
load zoned road
or bridge.
- Transport the load during daylight hours only. Night movement will be allowed
for emergency movement by utility companies only, to restore power. A rear
escort is required for emergency night movement by utility companies.
- Do not exceed 50 miles per hour.
- The following lighting must be displayed at all times:
- two red lamps visible at a distance of at least 500 feet from the rear;
- two red reflectors that indicate the maximum width and are visible, when light
is insufficient or atmospheric conditions are unfavorable, at all distances from
100 to 600 feet from the rear when directly in front of lawful lower beams of
light; and
- two red lamps, one on each side, that indicate the maximum overhang and are
visible at a distance of at least 500 feet from the side.
