The Texas Department of Transportation issues an annual rig-up truck permit
for the movement of such units on state-maintained roads. Carriers using this
permit cannot exceed 25,000 lbs on the steering axle(s) or 850 pounds-per-inch
of tire width on their steer axle(s).
The unit must be legal weight on all other axles.The truck unit may not haul
a load and the vehicle must be within Texas legal
height and length limits. How Do I Apply?
Submit a completed
Form 302,
Application and Renewal for Time Permits [pdf, 2 pages, 27kb] by fax
(512) 465-3585, by telephone (800) 299-1700, or by mail to the address on the application. Annual rig-up and unladen lift permits are annual permits and must be renewed
each year prior to the expiration date of the current permit. Carriers should
fax in permit renewals at least one week prior to expiration date.
Motor Carrier Registration Requirements A Texas Oversize/Overweight Surety Bond is required. Vehicle Registration Requirements Proper vehicle registration must be obtained through TxDOT's Vehicle Titles and
Registration Division or your
county tax office. Vehicle must be registered
under
Transportation Code,
Chapter 502 for the maximum gross weight applicable
to the vehicle under
Transportation Code,
Section 621.101, or have the
distinguishing license plates as provided by
Transportation Code,
Section
504.504, if applicable to the vehicle.
Vehicles with Temporary Registration are not eligible for this type of permit. Fees The annual permit fee is $52. Fees are payable by:
- MasterCard, VISA, Discover, American Express ($1 service charge)
- PAC-Permit Account Card
- personal check, business check, cashier's check, or money order, payable to the
Texas Department of Transportation (for mail applications only)
- cash (MUST be delivered to a cash office) or
- with funds deposited in a pre-established escrow account
Other Information
This permit allows for unlimited movement on state-maintained roads in the State
of Texas under the following conditions.
- Permitees may not travel over
load-zoned bridges when exceeding the posted
capacity.
- Permitees are responsible for routing and obtaining
current restrictions and
information concerning hazardous weather related
road conditions.
- 24-hour movement is allowed with this permit, provided width does
not exceed 9 feet.
- This permit may not be amended.
