Order a Permit Now! The State of Texas requires motor carriers to obtain a permit to transport
oversized loads along state-maintained roads. In addition to single trip
permits, the department issues 30, 60 and 90 day "time" permits to transport
these loads. Who Needs to Apply? In order to qualify for a 30, 60 or 90 day permit, vehicles and loads must be:
- no greater than 13’ wide, 14' high or legal length for an overwidth permit;
- no greater than 8'6" wide, 14' high, 110’ long for vehicles and loads on a
trailer for an overlength permit;
- no longer than 75' long for single vehicles moving empty or hauling a load.
Note: Overwide and overlength permits are not valid for
manufactured homes or
portable buildings.
How Do I Apply?
Customers may use
Online Permits (CPS) to apply for and receive a permit, or by submitting a completed
Form

Permits expire 30, 60 or 90 days from "movement to begin" date, depending upon
the type of permit purchased.
Motor Carrier Registration Requirements
Prior to obtaining an oversize/overweight permit, an applicant permitted
under the provisions of Transportation Code, Chapter 623, Subchapter D, must
be registered as a commercial motor carrier or, if not required to obtain a
motor carrier registration, file a surety bond with
the department.
A Commercial motor vehicle includes any motor vehicle or combination of
vehicles with a gross weight, registered weight, or gross weight rating in
excess of 26,000 pounds that is designed or used for the transportation of cargo
in furtherance of any commercial enterprise.
Vehicle Registration Requirements
Proper vehicle registration must be obtained through TxDOT's Vehicle Titles and
Registration Division or your
county tax office. Vehicle must be registered in
accordance with
Transportation Code,
Chapter 502, for maximum weight for the
vehicle or vehicle combination as set forth by Transportation Code,
Section
502.151. The permit will not be issued to a vehicle or vehicle combination that
is registered with temporary registration.

All fees are non-refundable.
Permit Renewal
Please send renewal applications at least one week prior to the expiration date
to ensure that the Motor Carrier Division receives the renewal application prior
to permit expiration.
Other Information
This permit allows for unlimited movement on state-maintained roads in the State
of Texas under the following conditions.
- Daylight movement only. Loads not exceeding 10' wide or 100' long with legal
front and rear overhang may travel at night on the Interstate Highway System
only.
- A 30/60/90 day overwidth permit may be used in conjunction with an 30/60/90 day
overlength permit.
- Empty oversize equipment may move to and from the job site or may transport a
non-divisible, legal load when returning to the point of origin, or their place
of business, provided the movement is completed within the time period stated on
the permit.
- Permittee is responsible for routing and obtaining
current restrictions and
information concerning hazardous weather related
road conditions.
- Permittee must follow all curfews as listed on the
Permit Movement Conditions and Curfews Form 001 [pdf, 1 page,
24kb], which must be attached to the permit at all times.
- Permittee may not travel over
load zoned roads or
bridges when exceeding the
posted capacity.
- Note: Overwide and overlength permits are not valid for manufactured homes or
portable buildings.
- Permits may not be amended or transferred between vehicles or permittees.
- Cannot have more than a 25' front overhang, or more than 30' rear overhang.
