It is TxDOT policy to furnish
and install mailbox supports for all rural postal patrons
located on state maintained highways. TxDOT will also
install mailboxes provided by the postal patron. This
service is provided free of charge.
TxDOT will allow only
mailboxes constructed of light-weight sheet metal or thin
plastic. Mailboxes can only be installed on safety supports
which have been crash tested and approved for use by TxDOT.
Many types of custom and commercially available mailboxes
and mailbox supports are potentially hazardous if hit by a
vehicle.
Yes, you may paint or apply
stickers or decals for names, addresses and/or designs.
However, decorative items that add weight to the mailbox are
not allowed because they can become hazardous objects if the
mailbox was struck by a vehicle.
