DeWitt C. Greer, P.E., was affectionately known as the "King of the Highway Builders." He graduated from Texas A&M College with scholastic honors in 1923. After several challenging positions in the road construction business, Greer went to work for the Texas Highway Department in 1927. In July, 1940, the 37 year old Greer was selected to become the department's State Highway Engineer. He served in that capacity for more than 27 years. After retiring from the department, Mr. Greer served another 10 years as both a member and Chairman of the Texas Transportation Commission.
