Refugio's Spanish Mission Education Kit

"Nuestra Señora del Refugio: Road to Discovery" was a joint effort of TxDOT's Corpus Christi District, Travel Information Division and Environmental Affairs. The video tells the story of Mission Nuestra Señora del Refugio (Our Lady of Refuge) and the city of Refugio. This was the last Spanish mission established in what is now Texas. The mission once stood on the site of the present Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church on U.S. 77 (Alamo Street), near the Mission River at the south end of the city of Refugio.

A project to improve U.S. 77 uncovered the mission’s cemetery, archeologically excavated in the summer and fall of 1999. Remains that may exceed 139 individuals, pending final analysis, were removed for study and reburial in a more appropriate location. The video tells the story of the mission people and those who followed in Refugio.

The video is distributed to schools, museums and other interested groups.
