Since 1991, the Automobile Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority has awarded more than 455 automobile theft prevention
grants totaling $171 million to cities, counties
and regions around the state. Funding programs include:
- law enforcement,
- prosecution and/or adjudication (including international prosecutions on
cases with Mexico),
- public awareness/education,
- prevention of the sale of stolen auto parts, and
- the reduction of the number of stolen vehicles crossing the Mexican
border.
Before the Authority was established in 1991, vehicle theft rates rarely
decreased, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Since then, auto theft in Texas has plummeted by 57 percent (per 100,000 registered
vehicles). |
