FM 474 - Boerne

TxDOT, the City of Boerne, and the Boerne Independent School District have partnered for the proposed intersection improvements on FM 474 at South Esser Road and Bentwood Drive. Construction begins January 23, 2012, and will continue for about eight months.

The contract was awarded to Dean Word Company of New Braunfels, Texas, for $2.05 million—about 18 percent under the state’s estimate for construction cost.

Proposed Improvements

The purpose of the project is to improve safety and traffic flow near Boerne High School. Proposed improvements include the following:

  • Reconfigure FM 474 at South Esser Road to a conventional 4-way intersection with traffic signals
  • Widen and rehabilitate FM 474 from Fawn Valley Road to Adler Road
  • Construct curbs and sidewalks
  • Construct a right turn lane onto North School Drive heading northbound on Esser Road
  • Construct shoulders from Chaparral Creek Drive to Adler Road

Construction

TxDOT and Dean Word Company are working to reconfigure FM 474 and complete all the proposed roadway work along FM 474. The work will turn the intersection of Esser Road, North School Drive and FM 474 into a four-way signal-controlled intersection.

The contractor has committed to limit lane closures during the school year to between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to avoid the bulk of school traffic. Additionally, TxDOT and the school district are coordinating to prevent (where possible) working during a sporting event.

Project Status

There will be no lane closures until Jan. 23, when construction is set to begin. Crews plan to complete work by the beginning of the upcoming high school football season.
