"Living on the Edge" – Week of November 9, 2009

 <itunes:author>Larry Krantz</itunes:author>

In Smith County, TxDOT maintenance crews this week are scheduled to perform edge repairs on eastbound Interstate 20 between US 271 and FM 2015 near the Gregg County Line. Crews will also be at work making pavement repairs on the FM 14 overpass at IH 20. That work will also require intermittent ramp closures at FM 14. Daytime lane closures will be in effect in each location while the work is in progress, and motorists should be prepared to reduce speed and merge in and around the work zone. Also, the EB offramp at US 69 will be closed Monday for resurfacing.

Special Edition: The New Texas DMV

 <itunes:author>Larry Krantz</itunes:author>

For more than 90 years, it's been TxDOT's job to register vehicles and issue license plates in Texas. All that comes to an end on November 2 this year when the newly-formed Department of Motor Vehicles opens is doors. In spite being comprised mostly of former TxDOT divisions and offices, there's still a lot to be done. To find out more about Texas' newest state agency, I spoke with its board chairman, Victor Vandergriff.

"Making Progress" – Week of October 26, 2009

 <itunes:author>Larry Krantz</itunes:author>

In Bullard, the overpass under construction at the intersection of US 69 and FM 344 is about a month away from a seal coat surface, and six weeks to two months away from being open to traffic. Once the overpass is opened to traffic, crews will begin work on the frontage roads allowing access between FM 344 and US 69. No lane closures are scheduled with this project, but the work zone speed limit is 45 mph at all times, and traffic fines double when workers are present. Also: various projects.

"A Break in the Weather?" – Week of October 19, 2009

 <itunes:author>Larry Krantz</itunes:author>

Weather has delayed our regularly scheduled work in the Tyler District for several weeks now, and with crews battling high water and downed trees throughout the district, a break in the rainy weather will be a welcome change of pace, especially in Wood County, where several roadways have been flooded repeatedly. Interview with Mineola Maintenance assistant supervisor Paul Burleson. Also, various projects.

Special Edition: Saenz on I-35 corridor: "We're Starting With a Blank Piece of Paper"

 <itunes:author>Larry Krantz</itunes:author>

***Listeners: Due to the rain last week, there are no significant changes from last week's podcast in terms of what to expect the week of Oct. 12. So instead of repeating myself, I've posted the latest edition of the TxDOT podcast.*** Back in January, TxDOT's Executive Director Amadeo Saenz kicked off the Annual Transportation Forum with a bombshell announcement that the Trans-Texas Corridor was dead. The I-35/TTC project was in the news again this week when an environmental document bearing the TTC name was presented to the public, along with TxDOT's decision to take no further action on the I-35/TTC project. The project may be dead, but the transportation needs along the I-35 corridor continue to grow. I spoke with Mr. Saenz on how TxDOT plans to meet those needs, and where the department goes from here.
