Bridge Project in Downtown Gainesville set to Begin

GAINESVILLE - Replacement of two bridges over Pecan Creek in Gainesville starts next week. Work will begin Tuesday, September 8, 2009 on the Broadway Street and FM 51/California Street bridges over Pecan Creek.

A primary goal of the projects is to relieve flooding issues in that area. The current bridges were built in 1931 and will be replaced with longer, wider bridges over Pecan Creek.

The FM 51/California Street bridge will be constructed first, followed by the Broadway Street structure. Detours will be in place while the bridges are closed during this construction.

The contractor plans to have both bridges complete by the end of July 2010. Bake Bridge, L.P., of Abilene, Tx submitted the low bid of just over $1-million for the project.
