LUBBOCK - The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is scheduled to begin work on a Safe Routes to School Program funded project in Abernathy this week. The project will make over $365,000 in sidewalk and ADA curb ramp improvements, said Mike Craig, P.E., Plainview Area engineer.
“Stoneridge Construction, Inc., of Albany, Texas, has been contracted to perform work to construct sidewalks along several city streets,” Craig said. “Abernathy residents will see sidewalks and ramps constructed along Avenue H, from 3rd to 12th Street, on 6th Street from Avenues K to E and ramps on the 8th and 6th Street, and Avenue E intersections.”
The addition of street lighting along the safe school route is also part
of the project, Craig added.
Motorists are urged to pay attention to posted work zone signs when
traveling through the construction area.
Work is expected to wrap up in February 2010.
The federally funded Safe Routes to School program makes funds available
for practical projects to make school routes safer for children to walk and
bicycle, such as sidewalks, crosswalks and bicycle facilities. Community
leaders, parents and schools also use education programs to help children
travel safely to and from school.
