TxDOT Lubbock District Launches Drive Friendly Campaign

LUBBOCK - South Loop 289—its Lubbock’s busiest roadway. More than 100,000 vehicles drive this highway everyday. That’s roughly half of Lubbock’s population merging onto or exiting the Loop. As Lubbock continues to grow, so does the amount of traffic on its roadways. More traffic means more vehicles. More vehicles mean more congestion. Getting on or off South Loop isn’t as simple as it use to be.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 26, TxDOT will launch its Drive Friendly Lubbock. Let ‘em on. Let ‘em off campaign.

“Few driving situations require more cooperation or courtesy among drivers than entering or exiting freeways, said Douglas Eichorst, P.E., Lubbock District engineer, “Our message to Lubbock motorists is simple—drive courteously by only using the right lane to merge onto or exit South Loop.”

Lubbock citizens will hear and see this message on their favorite radio and television stations in a 30 second public service announcement (PSA) developed specifically for Lubbock motorists and featuring footage of South Loop traffic.

“We decided the best way to get our message across was to show motorists how much easier it can be merging onto the Loop when through traffic stays in the middle or left lane,” Eichorst said. “We’ll also be utilizing the TransView dynamic message boards, located along South Loop, to remind through traffic to use these lanes.”

A little courtesy can go a long way on Lubbock’s busiest roadway. So, drive friendly Lubbock. Let ‘em on. Let ‘em off.
