TxDOT Team Wins National Award for IH 10-Katy Freeway Reconstruction

HOUSTON - The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) honored the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Katy Freeway Reconstruction Team with the President’s Award in the Highways category. Presented during its 2009 Annual Meeting held October 21-24, the President’s Award recognizes individuals or teams who have performed exemplary service that benefits transportation regionally or nationally. The recipient is selected by the president of AASHTO and the four regional associations of state highway and transportation officials.

The Katy Freeway Reconstruction Team, made up of the men and women in TxDOT’s Central Houston and West Harris Area Offices, and the two prime highway contractors, Balfour Beatty and Williams Brothers Construction Co., worked over the past six years to rebuild 23 miles of IH 10 West. This $2.8 billion megaproject was completed ahead of schedule and within budget, giving the traveling public an aesthetically pleasing freeway with additional capacity, including two high occupancy/toll lanes in each direction. The dedicated team worked seven days a week to manage designs, schedules, costs, and overall quality assurance.

Located within a heavily populated corridor west of downtown Houston, the Katy Freeway reconstruction was the largest undertaking in TxDOT history. An aggressive schedule provided the framework for project completion in less than six years. Typically a program of this magnitude would take 10 to 12 years to complete. Thanks to the work of this team, the celebration of the project’s completion took place October 28, 2008.

Houstonians are now able to move more freely to their destinations because of a dedicated team and plan that relied on open communication, effective problem-solving, and flexibility while successfully delivering a quality project ahead of schedule.
