Situation

TxDOT’s maintenance facilities include nearly 250 fueling stations for TxDOT vehicles. At a majority of those facilities, fuel usage is captured manually by employees who hand-write the data on clipboards attached to the pumps.

Weekly, clipboard entries are reconciled to actual fuel tank volume. The inconsistencies inherent in this manual process necessitate a reconciliation process that takes hours every week to perform.

Solution

A $400 fuel gauge automatically captures fuel use, thereby eliminating the manual process and the associated risk of errors.

Cost Savings

Installing a gauge on TxDOT fuel pumps will save more than $3 million annually. Installation is underway in select locations right now and department-wide installation will be complete this summer.
