Texas has 10,384 route miles of railroad track – more than any other state. While the heyday of the iron horse may be over, rail traffic still plays a vital role in the state’s commerce and travel. Rail freight is a significant factor in the Texas economy, and passenger rail has a future here, as well.
TxDOT oversees rail planning and safety in Texas. We apply for and administer federal grants for state railway projects and improvements. TxDOT even manages the South Orient Railroad, purchased by the state in 2001.
TxDOT’s Rail Division is charged with carrying out the Texas Rail Plan, which the Texas Transportation Commission approved in November 2010. It stakes out a broad, state wide vision for freight and passenger rail. Under TxDOT’s guidance, the railroad will remain a part of Texas’ identity for a long time to come.
