TxDOT issues an annual permit to transport cylindrical (round) bales of hay.
Why do I need an annual hay permit?
An annual hay permit is valid for one full calendar year and allows cylindrical bales of hay, loaded side-by-side up to 12-feet wide and all other legal dimensions, to travel on all state-maintained highways in Texas. How Do I Apply?
Customers may use Online Permits (CPS) to apply for and receive a permit, or by submitting a completed 302a, Application and Renewal for Time Permits by fax to (512) 465-3565. You may also apply by telephone (800) 299-1700, or by mail to the address on the application. Annual cylindrical bales of hay permits must be renewed one year from the "movement to begin" date.
Motor Carrier Registration Requirements
Prior to obtaining an oversize/overweight permit, an applicant permitted under the provisions of Transportation Code, Chapter 623, Subchapter D, must be registered as a commercial motor carrier or, if not required to obtain a motor carrier registration, file a surety bond with the department.
A Commercial motor vehicle includes any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles with a gross weight, registered weight, or gross weight rating in excess of 26,000 pounds that is designed or used for the transportation of cargo in furtherance of any commercial enterprise.
A farm vehicle with a gross weight, registered weight, and gross weight rating of 48,000 pounds or more, must be registered as a motor carrier.
Vehicle Registration Requirements
Proper vehicle registration must be obtained through TxDOT's Vehicle Titles and Registration Division or your county tax office. Vehicle must be registered in accordance with Transportation Code, Chapter 502, for the maximum weight, as set forth by Transportation Code, Chapter 621.
