Four options are being considered for this section of I-35, as described
below. Intersections will be improved to include U-turns and left turn lanes. A
direct connector, commonly called a fly-over, is proposed to connect northbound
FM 2113 traffic directly to the mainlanes of northbound I-35. Frontage roads
will be converted to one-way throughout the entire I-35 corridor.
Alternative 1 - East Option
[pdf, 1
page, 10mb]
The East option holds the existing right of way on the west side and shifts the
alignment of I-35 to the east. Approximately 200 ft of additional right of way
would be needed along the east side for this option.
Alternative 2A - West Option
[pdf, 1
page, 10mb]
The East option holds the existing right of way on the east side and shifts the
alignment of I-35 to the west. Approximately 200 ft of additional right of way
would be needed along the west side for this option.
Alternative 2B - Compressed
Option [pdf, 1
page, 10mb]
The Compressed option is similar to 2A, but is compressed in the City of Lorena
to minimize impacts to adjacent properties. North of Lorena, the alignment
transitions to the West option. This alignment could be modified to shift to the
east north of Lorena. Retaining wall would be required between the mainlanes and
frontage roads through the compressed area, which would eliminate the southbound
entrance ramp north of S FM 2837 and move the northbound exit ramp further to
the north.
Alternative 3 - Alternating
Option [pdf, 1
page, 10mb]
The Alternating option is a combination of the East and West options. The
alignment is shifted to the east through Lorena to minimize impacts in that
area. North of Lorena, the alignment shifts to the west to avoid impacts on the
east side near FM 3148. At FM 3148, the alignment shifts back to the east to
minimize impacts between FM 3148 and Hewitt. This option would be the most
disruptive to traffic during construction, requiring temporary lane closures and
traffic shifts.
