The preferred option for this section of IH 35 is a combination of the
previous options presented at the Open House in January 2007.
The alignment of south FM 2837 has been modified to the east of IH 35 to
improve the functionality of the FM facility. Likewise, the alignment of north
FM 2837 has been modified to the west of IH 35 to improve the tie to
IH 35.
A compressed section is being proposed between south FM 2837 and north FM
2837 to minimize impacts to adjacent properties in Lorena. A retaining wall
would be required between the mainlanes and frontage roads through the
compressed area, which would eliminate the southbound exit ramp and the
northbound entrance ramp north of the S. FM 2837 interchange. A new
northbound exit ramp has
been added south of the N. FM 2837 interchange.
North of Lorena, the alignment shifts to the west to avoid impacts on the
east side near FM 1695/FM 3148.
At FM 1695/FM 3148, the
alignment shifts back to the east to minimize impacts to the west side between
the interchange and Hewitt.
A direct connector, commonly called a fly-over, is proposed to connect
northbound FM 2113 traffic directly to the mainlanes of northbound IH 35.
Intersections will be improved to include U-turns and left turn lanes. Frontage
roads will be converted to one-way throughout the entire
IH 35 corridor.
Approximately 200 ft. of additional right of way would be needed through the
wide sections, and approximately 20 ft. of additional right of way would be
needed through the compressed section.
