Carlos
A. Lopez, P.E., is director of the
Traffic Operations Division of the Texas
Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The division is responsible for statewide
traffic operations, including traffic safety, engineering and management, and
railroad signals and crossings. He became director in May 1999.
Lopez worked in TxDOT's Laredo Area Office in 1979 as a summer employee while
earning his bachelor's degree in civil engineering at the University of Texas at
Austin. After graduating in 1982, he became a field engineer in the Design
Division in Austin and also spent a year of training in the Austin District. In
1987, he became a licensed professional engineer.
Selected as special projects engineer in 1988, Lopez transferred to the
Maintenance and Operations Division's Traffic Engineering Section. He was
responsible for the oil overcharge programs, including traffic-light
synchronization and traffic management.
Named Traffic Engineering Section manager of the newly formed Traffic Operations
Division in 1993, Lopez worked with districts and provided technical support on
traffic-related projects. He became division deputy director in 1996 and served
as interim director prior to being named division director.
Lopez is a member of the Texas Section of the Institute of Transportation
Engineers. He serves on the High Occupancy Vehicle Systems Committee of the
Transportation Research Board.
A native of Laredo, Lopez earned his master's degree in civil engineering from
the University of Texas at Austin in 1989. His hobbies are golf, racquetball and
basketball.
Lopez and his wife, Zulema, live in Austin and have two daughters.
