William
R. Cox, P.E., is director of the
Bridge Division of the Texas Department of
Transportation (TxDOT). Under his direction, the division develops policy,
standards, manuals, and guidelines for the design, construction, maintenance,
and inspection of the state bridge system. The division oversees and manages the
federal bridge inspection program for approximately 49,000 on-system and
off-system bridges in Texas, and the federal replacement and rehabilitation
program for on-system and off-system bridges in Texas. Division personnel
provide districts with in-house expertise in all aspects of bridge project
development, programming, structural and geotechnical design, plan review,
construction, maintenance, and inspection.
Cox began his TxDOT career as an engineering assistant in the Bridge Division in
1981. In 1990, he was named Director of the Bridge Construction section, later
serving as Director of the Bridge Construction and Maintenance branch in the
Construction Division from 1993 to 1999 before returning to the Bridge Division
as Director of Field Operations. In 2002, he received the Gibb Gilchrist Award,
which honors the performance of outstanding TxDOT engineers. He was named
director of the Bridge Division effective September 2004.
Cox received his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the
University of Texas at Austin in 1981. He and his wife Andrea have a son, Aaron,
and a daughter, Kendall. |
