Mario
G. Medina, P.E., was named TxDOT
Laredo District
Engineer in April 2006.
A Laredo native, Medina’s career with TxDOT began in the Laredo area
office where he worked five summers while pursuing his degree. His first
full-time position was in field coordination in the Design Division. From there,
he moved up the ranks until he left the division in 2002 as a manager of the
Consultant Contract Office. He then joined the Transportation Planning and
Programming Division as multimodal section director. He worked on multimodal issues, including railroad planning, railroad safety
inspections, state sponsorship of the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway, pedestrian and
bicycle planning and multimodal/intermodal planning projects.
Medina is involved in the Loop 20 Improvement Study, a $260 million project that
would widen Loop 20 at various overpasses. He is
also active in the US 83 Improvement Study in urban areas like Loop 20 South,
the Laredo Outer Loop Study and Rail Corridor Study.
Since becoming Laredo District Engineer, Medina has been instrumental
in the FM 1472 railroad grade separation, US 83-SH 359 Interchange, Loop 20-US
59 Interchange, the Laredo Cuatro Vientos project, the Del Rio Outer Loop
and the Val Verde County pass-through toll finance agreement to construct a $75
million relief route for US 277.
Medina’s past experience in railroad planning and multimodal/intermodal planning
projects is invaluable to the eight-county Laredo District, of which four
counties border Mexico with multiple rail crossings. Medina oversees all
planning, design, highway construction and roadway maintenance projects in Webb,
Duval, La Salle, Dimmit, Zavala, Maverick, Kinney and Val Verde counties.
Medina earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of
Texas at Austin in 1986. |
