Terry L. Keener, P.E., is district engineer for the
Childress District of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The district comprises 13 counties: Briscoe, Childress, Collingsworth, Cottle, Dickens, Donley, Foard, Hall, Hardeman, King, Knox, Motley and Wheeler. Keener’s appointment as district engineer took effect February 1, 2004.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University in 1971, he began his TxDOT career in the design office in Childress District as an engineering assistant II. Throughout the next few years he worked in several areas; maintenance, right-of-way, design, construction and lab. He received certification as a professional engineer in October 1975.
In August 1978, he moved to the Munday Area Office as the area engineer. As Munday area engineer, Keener was responsible for the design, construction, administration and maintenance in Knox, King and Dickens Counties of the Childress District. Keener returned to the Childress District Office as the district maintenance engineer in February 1982.
As district engineer for the Childress District, he feels that leading a district where mobility is seldom an issue, gives him the opportunity to concentrate on rehabilitation and maintenance of roadways to extend pavement life. He received the Gibb Gilchrist Award in 1998 for his contributions to Texas transportation.
Keener is a native of San Antonio, but has adapted well to the rural style of life. He enjoys working with the local youth on 4-H and FFA projects and is involved with the Childress County Old Settlers Rodeo Association.
Terry and his wife Susan have six children, Todd, Kristine, Melissa, Dustin, Christopher and Stephanie and seven grandchildren.
