Russel W. Lenz, P.E., is district engineer for the
Abilene District of the Texas Department of Transportation
(TxDOT). He is responsible for department activities in the district’s 13
counties: Borden, Callahan, Fisher, Haskell, Howard, Jones, Kent, Mitchell,
Nolan, Scurry, Shackelford, Stonewall and Taylor. He was named Abilene District
Engineer by the Texas Department of Transportation Executive Director Mike
Behrens, P.E. in December 2003 and assumed his new duties in January 2004.
He began his TxDOT career as a summer-employee
in 1979 in the Austin District, while a student at the University of Texas in
Austin. Upon graduation in 1982, Lenz was hired as an engineering assistant and
served the Austin District in various positions in design and construction
inspection including design team leader, associate design engineer and engineer
of special design. As engineer of special design, he was responsible for
preliminary design and plan preparation, as well as oversight and management of
bridge and freeway construction projects totaling more than $300 million. In
1993, he became assistant area engineer for the South Travis/Hays County Area
Office. Lenz was promoted to area engineer in 1994, a position he held until
leaving the Austin District for the Waco District in 1999.
Immediately prior to arriving in Abilene, Lenz
served as the deputy district engineer for the Waco District. Among his many
achievements at Waco was the formation and implementation of local safety review
teams, the recreation of the Waco Engineers Group, the furthering of
relationships with the contracting community and maintaining relationships with
local high schools and colleges to provide information about future employment
opportunities within TxDOT and the transportation industry.
Lenz earned his bachelor’s degree in civil
engineering in 1982 from The University of Texas at Austin.
A native of central-Texas, Lenz enjoys outdoor activities and family. Russel and his wife Cindy have two
children, Aaron and Rachel. |
